Higher Education Minister GT Devegowda on Tuesday confirmed that there will be a new fee regulatory committee.
“New Government, new decision, new committe. An amendment to the Karnataka Professional Education Institutions (Regulation of Admission of Determination Fee) Act, 2006 will be done soon. I will discuss this with cabinet colleagues before spelling out the details, ” he said.
The department has been thinking of forming a new panel ever since the existing Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC) headed by retired Justice DV Shylendra Kumar capped the fee hike at 8% even as private engineering, medical and dental colleges were demanding more. The Government managed to get the colleges to agree to 8% fee hike, but the stand off delayed the counselling process for admission to engineering colleges through CET. Asked whether the new committee is going to have members from private colleges too, he said, ” I will discuss this with associations and the education secretary”.
The Minister did not confirm whether the move would be the end of the road for the existing FRC, which was formed on a Supreme Court directive in 2005.
