Apple fans in India have a reason to rejoice as the US tech giant has finally got permission to manufacture its iconic iPhones in India after a long wait.
As per a statement issued by the government of Karnataka, the company will start operations to make iPhones in India out of a factory based in Bengaluru.
Welcoming Apple’s proposal, the state government on Thursday said that it had accepted the company’s plea “”to commence initial manufacturing operations” in the state.
It was earlier reported in December that Apple had finalised Bengaluru as it manufacturing hub, where the manufacturing activity will be carried out but there was no official statement confirming the same.
Praising the development, IT Minister Priyank Kharge said in a release that Apple’s plan to manufacture in India “will foster cutting edge technology ecosystem and supply chain development in the state, which are critical for India to compete globally.”
While the statement did not provide any timeline, production and assembly activities are expected to kick off as early as June.
After US and China, India will become the third country to globally assemble iPhones, which clearly proves the exponential growth of the technology domain in India.
As per the release, Taiwanese company Wistron, an OEM of Apple, will make iPhones locally out of its facility in Bengaluru’s Industrial hub Peenya.
The government is also in talks with the company to spur other projects as well. Kharge said the sole motive of allowing them move is to create a ‘conducive environment’ for global manufacturers like Apple to seamlessly manufacture in India.
With the new development, the exorbitant pricing of iPhones, which have now become a trend among the youth, is expected to come down as the phones will come without any import duty. Apart from that, new device releases will also be available earlier in India; currently the devices are available a month or two from its original release date.
The iPhone 7 is the latest device the company released last year at a base priceof ₹60,000 for the 32Gb variant. However, the prices of the new devices have now reduced on online ecommerce sites such as Flipkart.
